Participants must have a Meta Quest 3 or 3s to see content.

Powered by apoQlar HoloMedicine® — bringing ECD learning to life in 3D

These modules use the apoQlar HoloMedicine® platform, combining immersive VR experiences in HoloMedicine Spaces with interactive 3D models on the HoloLens 2 to support learning and application of ECD techniques.

Application of ECD Techniques

The patient library consists of 48 operative cases edited down to ~30min sessions. The cases are divided into 4 modules (Modules 2 to 5). Each module includes 12 cases.

Collectively they illustrate how the ECD technique can be applied in real live cases.

Previews are available to help selection of modules.

Module 2

Includes core cases, classical vs extended ECD, some malignant suspicion.

Module 3

Deep/special positions, nerve involvement, neurogenic tumours, early malignancy.

Module 4

Advanced ECD, nerve dissection, mastoid involvement, recurrent tumours.

Module 5

Advanced ECD, nerve dissection, mastoid involvement, recurrent tumours.

Participants must have an oculus to see content.

About Mark McGurk

Professor Mark McGurk is internationally recognised for his expertise in head and neck surgery and his commitment to advancing surgical practice through innovation and education. Alongside his pioneering work in salivary gland preservation and minimally invasive techniques, he is leading the integration of virtual reality (VR) into surgical training.

Through his research and teaching at University College London Hospital, Professor McGurk has developed detailed VR modules that accurately replicate complex head and neck procedures. These provide surgeons with an opportunity to explore anatomy, rehearse intricate extracapsular dissections and refine their surgical skills within a safe and controlled environment.

His work with VR reflects a lifelong dedication to improving patient outcomes and equipping the next generation of surgeons with the tools and techniques needed for modern surgical practice.
